Discuss the role and significance of social media in tourism Essay

Discuss the role and significance of social media in tourism marketing. You must consider the broader context of ICTs, new chann - Essay Example Travel involves movement through geographic space and time. Technologies take parts in all functions of strategic and operational management. Nowadays, social media is the main route where information is being shared and delivered in tourism, and also where offers made by the tourism suppliers are promoted. â€Å"According to a study made by Lab42, more than 50% of people who use social media when planning their trips change their plans depending on what information they learn from social media. For those people who had changed their travel plans, 43% of them even changed their hotels or resorts.† As information is so important to tourism, technologies provide both opportunities and challenges for the industry (DimitriosBuhalis, 1998). Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein have define social media as â€Å"a group of internet-based applications that build in the ideological and technological foundation of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated conte nt.† The users of the internet form virtual communities where they each have an anonym and protected identity. Consumer-generated content (CGC) is generated by the use of social media. It includes a variety of new and up-and-coming sources of online information, which are created, begun, distributed and made use of by consumers. This is done with the intent of enlightening each other about products, trademarks, services and concerns (Blackshaw&Nazzaro, 2006). In contrast, to the supplier- generated content (SCG) that is made available by marketers and suppliers, social media are created by consumers to be shared among themselves. With the enormous amount of data available to the travelers, the internet constitutes an important platform for information exchange between consumers with shared interests, as well as industry suppliers (e.g. attractions, hotels, and transportation sectors,), mediators (e.g. travel agents), regulation bodies (e.g. governments and executive organizati ons and non-profit organizations (e.g. destination marketing organizations) (Werthner& Klein, 1999). Today, Web 2.0 also referred to as Travel 2.0 in tourism, includes a range of new technological applications such as media and content syndication, mash-ups, AJAX, tagging, wikis, web forums and message boards, customer ratings and evaluation systems, virtual worlds, podcasting, blogs and online videos (vlogs) (Schmallegger& Carson, 2008). These social media include a wide range of applications, allowing consumers to â€Å"post†, â€Å"tag†, â€Å"digg†, or â€Å"blog† on the internet (Xiang &Gretzel, 2010). For example, Facebook, which is a social media website, allowing users to add friends, send messages to people and update their personal profile to notify friends about themselves during the travel; weblogs, individual or a group of people maintain a website with regular entries of commentary, description of events, or graphic materials like videos or images. Some travelers write travel blogs about their experiences and memories of the trip, which are online travel journals, also known as travelogs. YouTube, which is a website for sharing videos, which users can upload and distribute videos. This is a platform where vloggers (i.e. video blogging people) can record their traveling memories into video and upload onto YouTube for others to view, instead of typing a passage for people to read. There are many other

Architects And Styles In The Late 1900s In USA Thesis

Architects And Styles In The Late 1900s In USA - Thesis Example The architecture styles before the 1900s were New Romanesque, Victorian and Gothic with huge thick walls, tall columns and ornate carvings. One of the famous architects in the late 1900s was Henry Hobson Richardson who had studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The École des Beaux- style is evident in the New Romanesque style he developed.   He created a number of buildings in the USA from 1880 to 1900. The style he developed was also called as Neo Romanesque and it was a revival of the ancient Roman and Spanish styles but mixed with some modern elements. Some of the structures that belonged to this genre include Trinity Church in Boston; Buffalo State Asylum in New York and other structures. Some other architects that practiced the Neo Romanesque style included Cleveland Cady who built the   American Museum of Natural History building. Other structures that came up included the Williams Free Library in Wisconsin designed by Walter Holbrook, Fogg Memorial Building at Maine designed by George A. Clough; Durand Art Institute in Illinois by Henry Ives Cobb and many others. Cement concrete had not been invented in the 1890s and the main material used was stone and mortar. The style was called Neo Romanesque since these structures used the heavy and short column with extensive brick work and ornamented by ornate arches. The style puts the focus on clear arches that have a strong picturesque massing with a typical round-headed "Romanesque" arches. The arches emerged from groups of short squat columns.

Diabetes Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Diabetes - Research Paper Example From the statistics presented by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, it is also evident that the minorities that are exposed to diabetes have the high prevalence due to their lifestyles. Diabetes continues to be a disease that has social stigma to those suffering from it as it demands a lot of energy and time and it has long time complications to an individual’s body (Hall, 2011). Diabetes also happens to be a very physical disease that affects major organs in the body. Obese people tend to be more vulnerable to having this disease than healthy people and they struggle to manage this disease in all ways they can. This is mostly caused by the lifestyle these people live, for example, the kind of food they eat, lack of exercise and stress which makes them more vulnerable than others. Casey (2011), states that the factors that determines the outcome of the disease and the final effect that it has on the individual include the lifestyles that the individuals live and the social stigma that the patients undergo. In defining the lifestyles that many patients live in, it is important to mention the economic variable. AHRQ (2012) mentions that, in minority groups, economic barriers and the cultural difference plays an important role in determining the outcome of the treatment that patients are given. Some patients usually face a lot of economic barriers that prevent them from getting insulin treatment and they sometimes do not place their own medical needs before those of family members. Other variables that determine the outcome of the disease include distrust for medical personnel and preferences for other remedies (Fain, 2009). However, one of the most important variables in the management of the disease is the social stigma that the patients face. According to the Center for Disease Control, the social stigma that affects people living with diabetes increases the mortality from the disease (Tessaro,

Write your opinion about northern ontario Assignment

Write your opinion about northern ontario - Assignment Example This place the region in the north although the region is not very northerly compared to other Canadian provinces. The only distinct region in Ontario is the north and south. Over the years, the region that can be referred to as North Ontario registered a population decline. At the same time, southern Ontario gained population. In addition, the northern part is sparsely population but the southern regions have more people per square kilometer by more than 100 times. This population difference has not always been like that. According to statistics, northern Ontario has lost people due to emigration. The difference between the northern regions and the southern regions was probably not as large in the past. Economy in the north has been characterized by boom and bush. This probably explains wild population changes. Migrations must have been dictated by this boom and bust cycles. This kind of boom/bust cycles are common with economies that rely heavily in resource extraction. As long as the resource has huge demand, the boom attracts people and bust pushes people into other regions. Population in the north could have been more stable if the region’s economy was more diverse. There is little manufacturing that can give people stable jobs. The north trails other regions in terms of employment. The further north you move, the worse the problem of unemployment. When Ontario is compared to other regions in the county, the region as a whole fares poorly. Politically, the region feels isolated from the rest of Ontario. The problems of employment and exclusion are worse in the north and this creates disaffection. As a result, Northern Ontario Heritage Party want a separate province for the north so that the region’s problems can be better articulated without submersing them in those of the more prosperous southern region and other parts of Ontario. Northern also consider the southern ignorant of the problems that are present in the north. To make

Customer behavior summary about social media Essay

Customer behavior summary about social media - Essay Example We will therefore focus on these level of needs and how marketers can use them to their advantage. First are the physiological needs which are basically biological needs such as food, water, oxygen and shelter. Of all the needs, the physiological needs are the most important and basic and therefore, they should be satisfied first. In the social network sphere, the marketers can satisfy the customers’ physiological needs by finding out the information concerning nutrition and medicine of their existing and potential customers. The second level is composed of the safety or security needs which become active only after the physiological needs have been met. Whereas adults have usually little awareness of their safety needs apart from periods of emergency, children usually show signs of insecurity thereby prompting the need to be safe. Individuals can use social networks to update their status and inform security firms such as police and other authority of any insecurity or emergency. By doing this, the individuals’ safety needs are met appropriately. Thirdly, the needs of Love, affection and belongingness enables individuals to overcome the feelings of isolation and loneliness. These needs therefore comprises of both showing and receiving love and affection from others which one to have a sense of belonging.
